This intensive course equips newcomers to Baroque dance with a thorough grounding in basic skills, and provides experienced dancers with the opportunity for more in-depth study.
Each module can be attended independently and consists of three full days' tuition, three lunches and three dinners. Module 3 also includes a day at Tredegar House with lunch and tea, plus an evening party with buffet held at the Rubicon. With approximately twenty-four hours of tuition per module, participants may enrol for the first weekend, for one, two or three modules, or on a part-time basis (for example, local students may wish to attend just the morning technique sessions).
The Rubicon Centre has two dance studios with sprung floors and wall-length mirrors, a study room, café area, and changing and shower facilities.
Timetable
Classes run daily from 9:15am to 9:30pm unless otherwise stated, and are accompanied by recorded music or musicians on period instruments.
The daily timetable includes three technique classes with different level mixes to allow for consolidation and challenge. The course also incorporates a costumed lecture-demonstration and workshops on various aspects of Baroque dance including:
Steps in Context combines technique, presentation and reconstruction from original notation. The sessions enable participants to concentrate on the technique required to attain movement qualities for dances such as sarabande, bourée, gigue, menuet etc. (Video camera may be used during the presentation sections.) Non-notation readers will be taught a dance with reference to the notation.
Reconstruction/Presentation of Country Dances will examine a mixture of notated and written sources from dancing masters such as Bray, Feuillet and Lorin. Participants attending module 3 may wish to perform these at Tredegar House.
Free Time: Thursday evening (no dinner provided).
August 30th Bank Holiday Monday at Tredegar House
Interested course participants have the opportunity to present course-work and country dances in costume in the main hall at Tredegar House, with some free time to tour the beautiful 17th century house and gardens.
