Don Quichotte

The afternoon is used for a work in which all participants participate: Telemann's opera Don Quichotte auf der Hochzeit des Comacho, interspersed with dance movements from Telemann's Burlesque di Quichotte for orchestra. The opera is of course based on an episode from the impressive work "El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de La Mancha" (Don Quixote, the ingenious gentleman of La Mancha, 1605-1614, in two parts) of the Spanish writer Cervantes. Don Quixote is a country gentleman, who from reading chivalric romances starts believing he is called to eradicate the injustice in the world. He sets off on his steed Rosinante, accompanied by his squire Sancho Panza, and experiences many imaginary adventures (including the fight against the windmills). Also his largely imaginary romance with his "damsel" Dulcinea del Toboso is unforgettable.

Telemann's opera has four female roles and three male. There are four scenes for chorus. This opera program will be performed in a public concert at the Vokův Sál, the historic hall of Bechyně castle. It will be sem-staged.

Baroque dance

For the dance music in Telemann's Don Quichotte no choreographies exist - the question is whether at that time anyway. The music actually invites to dancing and ranges from beautiful, elegant pieces to folk melodies with a theatrical character, such a portrayal of the characters of Don Quichotte's horse Rosinante and Sancho Panza's donkey.

For the summer school and the performances Dorothée Wortelboer will make choreographies in baroque style - possibly a world premiere! The dancers will study these dances during the course, but there will also be time and attention to basic work on both the courtly and the grotesque Baroque dance style. Singers and instrumentalists will be introduced to the basic principles of Baroque dance and gestures and their influence of the musical performance practice. There will be ample time reserved for joint rehearsals to prepare the performances. The dancers will be costumed appropriately.
