Baroque Dance Workshop with Philippa Waite

We are delighted to host the internationally-renowned choreographer, performer and teacher of Baroque dance, Philippa Waite for a Baroque Dance Workshop.

Ms. Waite studied with Wendy Hilton and taught for her at the annual
Baroque Music and Dance Workshops at Stanford University. Ms. Waite is
currently guest teacher of Period Movement and Dance at the Royal Welsh
College of Music & Drama, Cardiff, and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
She is Artistic Director of Consort de Danse Baroque and as such
choreographs in the Baroque style for the company's productions; she also
teaches, performs and gives lecture-demonstrations throughout the UK
and abroad.

The workshop will include instruction in some of the basic dance steps
and arm motions in the main Baroque dance rhythms: bourée & menuet in the morning session and sarabande & gigue in the afternoon. Experienced students will be taught more complex steps required for ballroom and theatre dances. Extracts from choreographed and extant notated dances may be taught. However, the emphasis will be on the style, technique and performance of the dances, and not on the ability to memorise them.

Schedule:

What to Wear?
Please wear loose comfortable clothing and flexible shoes. If you have a selection of dance shoes, a flat pair or a pair with small heels is preferable to a pair with high heels (i.e. jazz rather than character shoes). Women's high-heeled ballroom dance shoes are not suitable. New students without suitable dance shoes are absolutely welcome. You might want to try either plimsolls, running/athletic shoes (though less grip is preferable), or an extra pair of thick socks that you don't mind getting dusty.
