Creating Music for Regency Dancing

The 200 Dances Project

At RegencyDances.org we have researched almost 400 English Regency dances from their original documents and animated them and provided dance descriptions and, where possible, a video of them being danced.

However - even though the dances and the music scores may exist, not everyone has access to musicians for all those practice sessions learning the dances before a ball or a display.  We have all suffered from this problem.  What we need is more authentic recorded music..

I have managed to persuade the lovely people at Ensemble ad Libitum to work with us without fee to record more than half of our dances in a suitable ensemble on period instruments.

Ensemble ad Libitum give concerts of historical music in United States, Germany and the Nederlands.  We have the dances and they have the early music expertise, so by getting together we have a unique opportunity to create a major cross-cultural contribution to both historical music and dance.

The plan is to record the dances onto 16 CDs - and also offer them as downloadable MP3s.  The albums will be released over about 18 months.  I don't think we will be treading on anyone's toes because we will choose dances where we can't find a good existing recording.

Everyone is giving their time for free but the project still needs to raise £12,500 (about $19,000 US Dollars) for recording studios, digital mastering and so on.  We have started a Kickstarter project to raise this money.  Your contribution, large or small, would be greatly appreciated.
