Module 1:
17th – 19th August
Friday dinner (7pm) to Sunday before dinner.
Arrival from 6:15pm.

Module 2:
19th – 22nd August
Sunday dinner (7pm) to Wednesday before dinner.
Arrival from 6:15pm.

Module 3:
23rd – 27th August
Thursday dinner (7pm) to Monday after party.
Arrival from 6:15pm.

This non-residential course is designed for all levels from the absolute beginner to the professional dancer.  The course will focus on the technique and presentation of Baroque dance leading to a series of short performances at Tredegar House on Monday 27th August.

This intensive course equips newcomers to Baroque dance with a thorough grounding in basic technique, and provides experienced dancers with the opportunity for more in-depth study.  Modules may be attended independently and participants may enrol for one, two or three modules, or on a part-time basis.  Those wishing to perform (less experienced students may also do so) should aim to attend Modules 2 & 3 unless previously arranged with Philippa.  If you prefer not to perform please attend Module 1 and/or 2, unless you'd like to be involved in other aspects of the performance, backstage help/costume etc.

The Rubicon Centre has two dance studios with sprung floors and wall-length mirrors, a study room, café area, and changing and shower facilities.

Timetable

Classes run daily from 9:30am to 9:30pm unless otherwise stated, and are accompanied by recorded music or musicians on period instruments.  Dinner is provided on-site most evenings; lunch is not provided, but there are many local shops selling a variety of produce very close to the Rubicon Centre.

Mornings: Two technique classes with different level mixes to allow for consolidation and challenge.

Afternoons: Workshops on a variety of topics including:

Steps in Context combining technique, presentation and reconstruction from original notation enabling participants to concentrate on the technique required to attain movement qualities for dances such as sarabande, bourée, gigue, menuet etc  (Video camera may be used during the presentation sections.)
Non-notation readers will be taught a dance with reference to notation.

Repertoire & Rehearsals: participants will be taught dances ranging from simple group & country dances to more complex ones for the performances at Tredegar House.  Performance skills – including technique & style – will be emphasised in these sessions, however, you don't need to be in the performance to learn these.

Evenings: Workshops/Lecture-Demonstrations on various aspects of Baroque dance.

Free Time: Thursday, August 23rd is a free day to explore Cardiff and surrounding areas.  There will be shorter periods of free time available for those only attending one module.

End of Course “All Periods” Dance Party
Monday 27th August
7:30pm at The Rubicon

The course will end with an All Periods Dance Party and Buffet.  Period costume optional.

Tickets:  £20 (course member not attending Module 3); £22.50 (non-course members); £40 couples (non-course members).
