Viennese Dances of the Strauss Era / Wiener Tänze anno Strauss

We would like to invite experienced or simply enthusiastic dancers to our dance week in February. This year we are going to enlarge our repertory by another dance of Karel Link, royal bohemian dancing master and member of the German Acadamy of the art of dancing. His ballroom Quadrille „Redowa“ was published 1881 in Prag and has five parts: Le papillon, Le changement, L’invitation, Les rondes, La Redowa.

Isabel Suri repeats the Bohemian Beseda for all who have done this dance before, and invites all others to learn it thoroughly.

This year Uwe Schlottermüller is going to join us as an instructor for Cotillons (in America known as Germans). Dancegames, dancefigures will be performed to dancesteps of Walzer, Polka and Mazurka.

Our first meeting will be on January 31st, at 3.30 P.M. in Wienmuseum, 1040, Karlsplatz in the permanant exhibition (entrance free). Paintings of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, as well as exhibits of the famous „Wiener Werkstätte“ will introduce us to Vienna around 1900.

Afterwards, we take the subway to the Viennese "Heurigen" Welser (Probusgasse 12, 1190 Vienna), where we can indulge ourselves in eating, drinking, and dancing. Therefore we need a clear promise to come (or not) to make the respective reservation

Daily classes will start on February 1st, from 10 am to 4.30 pm in Kolpinghaus, 9th district, Althanstrasse 51 (tram D, stop Augasse). All classes will be taught in German and English. At the Kolpingshaus you have the possibility to get lunch for a minimum price.

On Tuesday we will have a fancy dress ball: the river Danube, not only flowing through Vienna ...

There will be no classes on Wednesday afternoon, so participants are free to explore Vienna or just rest their feet.
The afternoon Tea Dance on Friday, February 5th from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., will unfold in Biedermeier charm in the Straußelsälen, the last remaining dance hall in Vienna in which Strauss and Lanner played for dances, with afternoon dress of the first half of the 19th century.

And, finally, we will pay homage to the incomparable Viennese Ball culture of the second half of the 19th century on Saturday, February 6th 2010, by returning to the Grand Ballroom of the Palais Pallavicini, the site of our spectacular closing Ball of the last years. The magnificent setting of this historical palace along with the live music and splendid buffet dinner and dessert will transform you into a true Viennese enjoying “a bit of heaven”. Following Viennese custom, we will have dance cards at the Ball. The dances will be: Redowa-Quadrille and Beseda, common turning dances (waltzes, polkas and Galops) and some contradances as the Sir Roger or the Cotillon, which will be called.
For participants of the danceweek the Saturday is free until 4:45 p.m. or optional the French Quadrille class as follows:

A Ball Preparation Class on The French Quadrille for dancers who do not attend the daily classes will be offered on February 6th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All venues will be NON-SMOKING!

Vienna offers visitors many low cost tickets, which include admissions to museums as well as unlimited trips on its fine public transit systems (subways, trams, and busses).
For participation for the danceweek, the Thé dansant and the Grand Straußball a registration by e-mail, mail or phone adressed to Hannelore Unfried is necessery. The registrationfee of 45.- € is included in the prices above. Refunds for reservations cancelled after January 10th , 2010, will be charged 45.- €.

German version

Zu unserer achten Tanzwoche im Februar laden wir alle Tanzfreudigen und Tanzerfahrenen herzlich ein. Heuer stellen wir den bereits bekannten königlich böhmischen Landestanzlehrer und Mitglied der deutschen Akademie der Tanzlehrkunst Carl Link ins Zentrum unseres Programms. Er veröffentlichte seine fünftourige Salon-Quadrille „Redowa“ (Le papillon, Le changement, L’invitation, Les rondes, La Redowa) 1881 in Prag.

Die Beseda, den böhmischen Salontanz, liegt als Wiederholungstanz, aber auch zum Einsteigen in den bewährten Händen von Isabel Suri.

Als Novum verstärkt Uwe Schlottermüller das Dozententeam. Er wird u.a. den vielgestaltigen „Lieblingstanz der Damen“, den Cotillon, in seinem Facettenreichtum ausbreiten: Tanzspiele
in Walzer-, Polka-, und reizvollen Mazurkaschritten.

Die aus Prag stammende Expertin für historischen Tanz, Frau Prof. Eva Kröschlová, wird uns mit ihrer Fachkenntnis bereichern.

Wir treffen uns am 31. Jänner 2010 ab 15.30 Uhr im Wienmuseum, 1040, Karlsplatz in der „Dauerausstellung“ (Eintritt frei!). Gemälde von Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, sowie Arbeiten der berühmten Wiener Werkstätte entführen uns ins "Wien um 1900".

Anschließend fahren wir gemeinsam in das bewährte Wiener Heurigenlokal Welser (1190 Wien, Probusgasse 12) in Heiligenstadt, wo wir Speis, Trank und Tanz frönen können. Dazu benötigen wir eine verbindliche Anmeldung wegen der Platzreservierung im Lokal.

Ab 1. Februar 2010 finden die täglichen Tanzstunden zwischen 10:00 und 16:30 Uhr im Kolpinghaus 1090 Wien, Althanstrasse 51 (Straßenbahnlinie D: Station Augasse) statt. Dort besteht auch die Möglichkeit, ein günstiges Menü einzunehmen.

Am Dienstag treffen wir uns um 18:00 Uhr zu einem Gschnas (Faschingsfest). Die Inspiration für Kostüme, Spiele und Szenen liefert heuer der nicht nur durch Wien fließende Strom: die Donau. Der Mittwoch Nachmittag ist frei für individuelle Aktivitäten.

Der „Thé dansant“ (Freitag, 5. Februar 2010, 15.00-18.00 Uhr) entfaltet seinen bieder-meierlichen Charme bei entsprechender oder festlicher Abendkleidung in den „Sträußelsälen“ (Theater in der Josefstadt, 1080 Wien, Josefstädter Straße 26).
Die einzigartigen Räumlichkeiten des Palais Pallavicini (1010 Wien, Josefsplatz 5) bilden den überwältigenden Rahmen für den Abschlussball in (historischer) Ballgarderobe am 6. Februar 2010. Eine Tanzkapelle unter der Leitung von Prof. Ingomar Rainer wird zu diesen beiden Festlichkeiten aufspielen.

Der Samstag ist für Kursteilnehmer bis zum Eintreffen im Palais Pallavicini um ca. 16:45 frei. Ballbesucher, die nicht am Kurs teilnehmen, können sich am 6. Februar 2010 von 10.00 - 13.00 Uhr mit einem Quadrillekurs auf das abendliche Fest einstimmen.

Wer nicht die ganze Woche dabei sein kann, ist uns zum Thé dansant und/oder dem großen Straußball herzlich willkommen. Die zahlreichen Walzer, Polkas, Galoppe, sowie die Quadrille und die angeleiteten Tänze wie der Cotillon und der Sir Roger sind für alle zum mitmachen. Lediglich die beiden Kurstänze Redowa und Beseda sind den Kursteilnehmern vorbehalten und können als Tanzdarbietung genossen werden. Die Ballkarten nach historischem Vorbild sorgen für Abwechslung der Tanzpartner.
