Michael Malkiewicz

Dr Michael Malkiewicz was born 1967 in Salzburg. He studied the violin at the 'Mozarteum' University of Music and Performing Arts in Salzburg and from 1986 to 1992 was baroque violinist with the ensemble 'La Follia Salzburg', as well as being a member of a historical dance group. At the same time, he studied musicology, theology and Slavic languages at the University of Salzburg. From 1996 to 1997, he held a fellowship at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Rome, and in 2001 received a PhD with an analysis of the music and dance of 16th century court dance in Italy. From 1996 to 2002, he was a research assistant at the 'Freie Universität Berlin', focusing on castrati (publications, concerts, exhibition, TV). From 2002 to 2004, he was a research assistant at the University of Salzburg where his work concerned the music of the ballet en action. He was also a research assistant at the Volkswagen-Foundation from 2004 to 2008, where he studied the relationship between music and dance in ballet from the 16th century to the 20th century. We has undertaken projects on dance theory and practice with video 'transcription' ('La Pellegrina', Sarabande, etc.).
