MAIN COURSES (9:00-13:00)
Lieven Baert--level 1: introduction to Italian, French and English 16th-17th century dances. Technique and balletti by Fabritio Caroso e Cesare Negri; gagliarda variations of Santucci; English country dances (Playford) and Measures of the Inns of Court
Barbara Sparti--level 2: The balletto "della duchessa", Martel d'amore, choreographed by Leone Tolosa, recently rediscovered, and performed in 1582 by the Duchess of Ferrara and other seven ladies of the court, dressed as four shepherds and four nymphs.
Dances from Santucci's Mastro da ballo, 1614, Allegrezza d'amore, Galleria d'amore (with virtuosic gagliarda and canario variations), Pavaniglia variations.
Some of Santucci's basic steps seem to suggest a bridge between the Italian Caroso-Negri style and that which will emerge in France later in the 17th century. Particular attention will be given to step technique, style and interpretation (the affects of different dances and dance types within a balletto), and musical questions.
Gloria Giordano--French baroque dance -- for all levels: Technique of steps, sequences and arms. Dances by Guillaume Louis Pécour: Sarabande à deux (Feuillet, 1704), Contre-dance à deux (Feuillet, 1704), La Bretagne (ms. Descan, 1748)
