I Ciarlatani leiten ihren Namen von den "Ziarlatini" ab, über die Michael Praetorius berichtet, daß sie in Italien "Villanellen und andere närrische Lumpenlieder" sangen. Das 1982 in Heidelberg gegründete Ensemble singt und spielt Musik aus Mittelalter und Renaissance und verwendet historische Instrumente, die den jeweiligen Werken und ihrer Zeit angemessen ausgewählt sind.
