Versailles, die glänzende Residenz des Sonnenkönigs Ludwig XIV., - mit seinen endlosen Kolonnaden, kerzenerleuchteten Zimmerfluchten und spiegelgeschmückten Prachtsälen die Verkörperung des Barocks schlechthin - wäre ohne Musik und Tanz nicht vorstellbar gewesen. Kein prunkvolles Fest, keine intime Abendgesellschaft ohne Menuette, Bourrées, Sarabanden und Contredanses. Mal heiter ausgelassen, mal ernst und leidenschaftlich repräsentierte dieser elegante Stil die ganze Bandbreite barocken Lebensgefühls im Ballsaal und auf der Bühne.

Im Zentrum des nebenstehenden Bildes ist ein Turnier mit einer sog. „Barriere“ zu sehen, ein etwa 1,50m hohes Holzgerüst, über das hinweg junge Edelleute mit Waffen ihre Kräfte maßen. Ein Turnier mit einer Barriere war dabei ein so genanntes „Fußturnier“, d.h. die Kämpfer waren nicht beritten. Turniere waren häufig Bestandteil von höfischen Feierlichkeiten, so wie hier auf dem Bild für die Hochzeit des Herzogs Johann Wilhelm von Jülich-Kleve-Berg mit Jacobe von Baden 1585 in Düsseldorf.

Introduction and practice of the Court Dance based on Italian humanist theories. By learning the style and the rules established by the Italian masters of the time, we will be able to revive the Renaissance on our skin.

We will practice unreleased dances reconstructed through original Treaties.

The Georgian Ball is hosted annually by Bath Minuet Company and has become a highlight of the early dance calendar. The Guildhall in Bath continues to provide the perfect setting for this event which draws enthusiasts and practitioners of historic dance from across the UK. A dance workshop is held on the afternoon preceding the ball for the benefit of persons wishing to attend and to assist those with perhaps less dance experience.
