Our speaker, social historian Mike Rendell, will look at dance in the Georgian era from a social history point of view – its importance, what it was like to go to Bath, to the Pantheon, to Almacks, what people wore, how they travelled, the role of the Master of Ceremonies, the growth of Masquerades – and finally some press reaction to the introduction of that grossly immoral and shocking dance, the waltz.

From Friday 5th April to Wednesday 10th April 2019 Chalemie will hold its 21st Summer School in Early Music, Dance, Period Costume Making and Commedia. Leading performers from the group will direct a series of workshops on 17th/18th century music, song, dance, commedia and costume making, with a particular emphasis on the English repertoire of this period.

The course this year will be held once more in the delightful surroundings of Headington School, in beautiful old buildings just a mile from the centre of Oxford and situated in 22 acres of parklands, gardens and woodland.

Traditionell gilt die Nacht vom 30. April auf den 1. Mai als die Nacht,
in der die Hexen insbesondere auf dem Blocksberg (eigentlich Brocken),
aber auch an anderen erhöhten Orten ein großes Fest abhalten.
Diese Vorstellung ist beeinflusst von den Beschreibungen
des Hexensabbat in der Literatur des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts.

THE SPANISH SPIRIT:
a Hartig Ensemble Summer School in picturesque Cesky Krumlov.

Jane Gingell and Konrad Przybycien teach Spanish Escuela Bolera Dance, and Helena Kazarova and members of the Hartig Ensemble teach Renaissance and Baroque dances in the Spanish Style.

The course takes place in the Study Centre of the Cesky Krumlov Castle complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It begins on the Sunday evening with social dancing, followed by six-hour teaching days from the Monday to the Saturday.

The course will cater for all levels, with parallel classes.
